Our Story
Peter Drayton is a fifth generation Hunter Valley winemaker, whose family have been growing grapes and crafting wine in Pokolbin since the 1850s. But Peter Drayton Wines is its own story, independent and built from scratch.
With origins in Civil Engineering, Peter established IronBark Hill Vineyard in 2001. That building background shows in everything on the property - the working winery, the custom-built brewhouse for IronBark Hill Brewing Co, the Wildstreak Kitchen, a wedding chapel, function centre and boutique accommodation. If it's standing on the property, there's a good chance Peter had a hand in building and designing it.
The vineyard sits at the foot of the Brokenback Range in Pokolbin; a sprawling 40 hectare property with 18 hectares under vine. The estate grows the varieties the Hunter does best - Semillon and Shiraz - alongside Cabernet Sauvignon, Verdelho, and the CSIRO-developed Tyrian, all under our Wildstreak label. We've also built a growing range of Mediterranean and alternative varieties, including Sangiovese, Barbera, Fiano, Vermentino, Graciano and more, which were sourced from vineyards across the Hunter Valley and beyond, and are released under our Anomaly label.
Peter's small yet dedicated team craft everything from crisp whites and full-bodied reds through to sparkling wines, fortified liqueurs, craft beer, gin and spirits. It's a lot, but that's what happens when you follow your curiosity and surround yourself with good people who care about what they're making.
Come in for a tasting, relax and stay awhile, and see what we're about. No pretence, just good food and fantastic wines, all made with care.
